when i was in chile a bit ago, my local contacts exercised some of the finest hospitality i’ve ever experienced and did me the massive favor of introducing me to a new artist. it generally takes me a bit to fall in love with someone new.
but.
once every blue moon, someone will come along and completely blow my mind. in 2021, it was Little Simz with “might bang, might not” and PIRI with "Decapitation." now, in 2024, enter ana tijoux, via “Somos Sur.” from what i understand, i’m super late to the game and she’s been a popular name in chile for a hot minute. to the people of chile: i am so sorry it took me so long to listen to her because she absolutely bangs. do i understand the lyrics? no. do i need to understand the lyrics? it would certainly behoove me to run them through google translate, but emotion transcends language and whatnot. her music is so compelling i can pick up what she’s putting down without any external linguistic aid. thank you chile. te amo.
